Melanotan II is a synthetic cyclic analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) studied in research into melanocortin-receptor signalling pathways in experimental models.
Melanotan 2 (Melanotan II, MT-2) is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide analogue of alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH), with the sequence Ac-Nle-cyclo[Asp-His-D-Phe-Arg-Trp-Lys]-NH2. It carries the molecular formula C50H69N15O9, a molecular weight of 1024.2 g/mol and CAS number 121062-08-6. It is supplied as a lyophilised powder strictly for laboratory research.
As a melanocortin receptor ligand, Melanotan 2 is used as a reference compound in non-clinical studies. It is sometimes written as MT-II, Melanotan-2 or melanotropin. It is a research chemical only, not a food, cosmetic, supplement or medicine, and it is not supplied for, and not to be used for, cosmetic pigmentation or any human or veterinary use.
Melanotan 2 is not a controlled drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, so it can lawfully be supplied in the UK as a research chemical. Purity is assessed by HPLC at >= 99%, and identity is confirmed against the expected mass and verified identifiers: CAS 121062-08-6, PubChem CID 92432 and InChIKey JDKLPDJLXHXHNV-MFVUMRCOSA-N. Peptide purity
Store unreconstituted vials at -20°C for long-term, or refrigerated at 2-8°C for short-term use. Avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
Reconstitute with bacteriostatic water down the inside wall of the vial; gently swirl to dissolve. Do not shake.
Once reconstituted, refrigerate at 2-8°C and use within 2-4 weeks. Discard if cloudy, discoloured, or particulate.
