Melanotan II is a synthetic cyclic analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) studied in research into melanocortin-receptor signalling pathways in experimental models.
Melanotan 2 (Melanotan II, MT-2) is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide analogue of alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH), with the sequence Ac-Nle-cyclo[Asp-His-D-Phe-Arg-Trp-Lys]-NH2. It carries the molecular formula C50H69N15O9, a molecular weight of 1024.2 g/mol and CAS number 121062-08-6. It is supplied as a lyophilised powder strictly for laboratory research.
As a melanocortin receptor ligand, Melanotan 2 is used as a reference compound in non-clinical studies. It is sometimes written as MT-II, Melanotan-2 or melanotropin. It is a research chemical only, not a food, cosmetic, supplement or medicine, and it is not supplied for, and not to be used for, cosmetic pigmentation or any human or veterinary use.
Melanotan 2 is not a controlled drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, so it can lawfully be supplied in the UK as a research chemical. It is not authorised by the MHRA for human or veterinary use, and it is not a licensed medicine. Kovalabs supplies it solely as a laboratory reference material on a research-use-only basis. It must not be administered to humans or animals, and the buyer is responsible for compliant handling, storage and disposal. See our research disclaimer.
Every batch of Melanotan 2 is released against an independent Certificate of Analysis. Purity is assessed by HPLC at >= 99%, and identity is confirmed against the expected mass and verified identifiers: CAS 121062-08-6, PubChem CID 92432 and InChIKey JDKLPDJLXHXHNV-MFVUMRCOSA-N. Not all material labelled the same way is equivalent, which is why we publish testing for each lot. Browse current documentation on our Certificates of Analysis page.
The published literature investigates Melanotan 2 as a non-selective agonist at melanocortin receptors (MC1R, MC3R and MC4R) in pre-clinical and in-vitro model systems. This receptor-pathway work is laboratory research only. None of it establishes a benefit, effect or outcome in humans, and Melanotan 2 is not a licensed medicine. It is not supplied for, and not to be used for, cosmetic pigmentation, skin appearance changes or any other human use. Related research materials are grouped under the melanocortins category.
Melanotan 2 is produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis, cyclised and purified, then lyophilised to a white to off-white solid for stability in transit. For laboratory handling it is typically reconstituted in bacteriostatic water; store the lyophilised powder at -20C, dry and protected from light, and hold reconstituted material at 2-8C. Vials are despatched from the UK. Researchers comparing melanocortin reference compounds may also review Melanotan 1 and PT-141.
